Self-defense keychain is my top choice for a self-defense tool. My keys are actually attached to an ASP Key Defender OC Spray. Not only does it serves the purpose of a well-designed keychain but it’s also a well-designed self-defense tool. It got me out of trouble already and will (hopefully) continue to do so as long as I remember my keys. I’ve carried various “self-defense weapons” in the past, like a balisong, a small dagger, a pair of arnis, a telescoping baton, a brass knuckledusters and even a real-looking high-powered airgun! I say “self-defense weapons” in quotations because most of these are considered lethal weapons and in the eyes of the law are no different from a gun. All of which that I carried can kill or cause life-threatening injury. And knowing what I know now, these are not self-defense tools. Pressed for time? Here's a quick list why you should buy a self-defense keychain now!
Characteristics of a Great Self-Defense WeaponIn my opinion, nothing beats a self-defense keychain. As you can see, I’m an advocate of self-defense keychains and I wish to share with you my personal opinion why you should replace your keychain with a self-defense keychain tool. It's Non-Lethal The perfect self-defense tools are non-lethal instruments because the goal of self-defense is not to kill or seriously injure another human being. You goal is to stop a person from attacking you. Unlike the ones I carried in the past, most self-defense keychain are weapons that don’t kill. This is important in self-defense because you don’t want to end up as the bad guy. Self-defense keychains are non-lethal weapons therefore saving you from the possible headache of the justice system should you end up, god forbid, killing someone! Non-lethal also means that you don’t need any special permit to carry one. You also don’t have to deal with certain restrictions except possibly for pepper sprays. It's With You & It's AccessibleAs long as you need to enter doors and drive cars, most likely, you’ll carry keys with you. This is my top reason why I chose a self-defense keychain: it’s always with me. For most people they keep their keys in their pocket or within easy access. This makes a self-defense keychain my top choice. Not only is it with you all the time, it’s also accessible. Most likely, the act of accessing your keys is almost second nature and thus might be considered as a gross motor skill. This makes deploying and handling your self-defense tool a breeze even under stress. The best self-defense tool that you could ever have is the one that is on you! If you have the best weapon in the world but you forgot it at home, what use will it have when someone attacks you? Violence has no pattern (or at least one that we could readily detect) and it usually strikes almost without warning. That's why you need to have that self-defense tool with you all the time and within easy access. You Handle It All The Time You reach and use your keys regularly. This sort of frequency of use creates familiarity with the object that you’re handling. The more you handle your self-defense tool the more likely that you’ll be comfortable with it. To illustrate a point, if you handle a Kubaton all the time then you’re more likely to be familiar with the ins and outs of that object than a brass knuckleduster. And again, this makes you more effective in a high-stress self-defense scenario. Familiarity with your self-defense tool is important because the first action you take towards defending yourself should come almost as an instinct. One tip here is whenever you use your keys, practice deploying your self-defense weapon positively. Then proceed to normally using your keys. This way you program yourself how to use and deploy your self-defense keychain tool. Disguised & DiscreetA self-defense keychain is mundane enough to blend into your daily routine. It doesn’t call attention to itself. People don’t usually give keychains a second look or even question its presence, compared to a knife or a can of pepper spray. It's also easy to conceal. That said it’s easy to sneak a self-defense keychain such an ASP Key Defender to clubs and other such places where weapons are usually checked. The element of surprise is therefore on your side, should you be attacked. Speaking of element of surprise, this is a very important factor. When your attacker is surprised, you short-circuit his thinking. You disrupt his plan and therefore could buy you enough time to escape. It's Cheap & Easy to BuySelf-defense keychains are cheap, easy to buy and easy to replace. Though it’s highly unlikely that you’ll lose it, since losing it also means losing your keys! There are a lot of options for different people. Surely one of these self-defense keychains would fit your budget and your particular preferences. BONUS: It's a Keychain! It’s a f#*king keychain! It’s not another extra thing that you need to worry about forgetting. As long as you remember your keys, you’ll have your self-defense tool with you. When it comes to self-defense you want to be as prepared as you possibly can. If that means transforming something as mundane as an object that keeps your keys or replacing your keychain with an odd looking key fob, by all means, go! You don’t need an extra weapon or tool or object to remember carrying all the time. Just replace your keychain with a defensive tool and remember to always bring your keys. You have a lot of things to worry about already, having a self-defense tool shouldn't be one of them. Self-Defense Keychain in action - Photo by: Evan Wohrman via Foter.com
