People asked what is the best self-defense keychain or tool they could buy. I say good running shoes and a pair of strong legs will suffice. Unfortunately, this advice doesn’t put people at ease. Otherwise you won’t be on this site and this site won’t exist!
I understand, you want to do more. I believe that the best self-defense tool is something that you handle or use everyday, familiarity with your self-defense tool breed proficiency with the tool. That’s why I’m a big fan of self-defense keychains. They’re always with you, you handle them all the time, and you never leave home without it. In a hurry? Here's a list: Self-Defense Keychains Worth The Money
I believe that self-defense keychains are the best self-defense tools you can buy if you really have to carry a defensive weapon. There are some worth buying and there are some that are completely useless when it comes to being a defensive weapon. So I want to narrow down your choice and help you decide which one is best for you.
ASP Key Defender OC Spray
ASP Key Defender OC Spray tops the list of self-defense keychain, for the reason that it has stopping power. It’s has a long-range capability as a pepper spray and can be used as an impact weapon like the Kubotan when the OC (oleoresin capsicum) insert runs out. It fits in the pocket and it’s very discrete. In my opinion, at 5.5” it’s a good compromise between portability and utility as a self-defense weapon.
ASP Palm Defender OC Spray
If ASP Key Defender is not compact enough for you, the ASP Palm Defender OC Pepper Spray will fit you perfectly at 4.5”, an inch shorter than the Key Defender. It’s built with the same material and uses the same pepper spray formulation. It fits the palm just right, with enough metal protruding out of a closed fist.
ASP Street Defender OC Spray
ASP Street Defender OC Spray is the big daddy of The Key and Palm Defenders. People with big hands would appreciate the whopping 6.5” length of The Street Defender. The extra length also makes it easier to use for pain compliance techniques. Those that doesn’t mind the extra bulk will surely appreciate this one.
Kubotan (Hand Stick)
Pepper sprays although legal items are still considered as a “weapon” by most civilized countries and as such might be restricted or controlled by law. Or in some territories or countries might even be considered illegal. This is where the original hand stick, The Kubotan and The Monadnock KKC-Groved Persuader comes in. It’s similar to the ASP Defender pepper sprays, just without the capsicum insert.
Comtech Stinger Self-Defense Keychain Force Manipulator Tool
Comtech Stinger is essentially a redesigned knuckleduster that looks like some sort of a Celtic/Gothic keychain. I personally think that you should get this one if you’re considering a kitty cat self-defense keychain. Because The Stinger is designed to retain your dexterity. In my opinion it's also easier and faster to deploy than self-defense keychain kitty.
TI-EDC Self-Defense Keychain Tool
To those who want a strictly keychain-looking self-defense weapon, consider TI-EDC Self-Defense Keychain Tools. It’s beautifully handcrafted and made of TC4, high strength titanium alloy. A bit on the pricier and pretty side, no one will suspect it’s a weaponised keychain. This elegant looking piece of titanium makes for a good gift and enough to attract anyone who doesn’t want a gaudy-looking keychain.
Cold Steel Micro Recon 1
A knife makes our list because Cold Steel Micro Recon 1 is a keychain knife and it comes in a variety of (cute) colors, such as hot pink or blinding orange! It’s small and sturdy. Only consider buying this knife as a last resort tool, a “get-off-me” thing. Even at with a 2” blade please check if you can legally carry this folding knife.
Please read on lethal force and other legal issues before making any self-defense knife purchase. We’re not advocates of lethal weapons, but if you must absolutely carry one, I’d prefer that you get as much information as possible. Also please read SDKHQ's disclaimer. BONUS!
As a bonus, here are 3 more self-defense tools that are worth considering. They don’t fit the self-defense keychain category. They fit the EDC category more, but are nonetheless extremely useful for self-defense (as long as you know how to use them) and like a self-defense keychain you rarely leave home without one on you.
Tactical Pens
Though not a keychain, if you habitually carry a pen in your front pocket then you might consider buying a tactical pen as a defensive weapon. Gerber Impromtu Tactical Pen and Smith & Wesson Military and Police Tactical Pen are ones you should be looking at. If you want a more elegant-looking pen that could pass the TSA consider Boker Plus Titanium Tactical Pen. Forget the cheap Chinese copies, please! It’s your safety that we’re talking about. Get something that is well-made.
Furry Tactical Griffin Grip Concealable Control Device
Furry Tactical Griffin Grip is definitely not a keychain but it’s small, portable, and cheap enough to add to your arsenal of self-defense tools. It’s easy to use, deploy and carry… oh wait, it’s already deployed and you don’t have to carry it. You don’t need extra training to learn how to use it, if you know some open hand techniques, and could catch a fist with your palm you’ll be able to use The Griffin Grip effectively. Take the khaki-colored one, it's more discreet.
Halotex G2 Cree Tactical Flashlight
Yes, a flashlight. Though it may not be a keychain, Halotex G2 Cree Tactical Flashlight is small enough to be an EDC flashlight, which means it will be on you most of the time. But it’s a flashlight! Well, tactical flashlights make good self-defense weapons especially at night. Flash the guy in the eyes, hit with the glass breaker and run! With the emergence of super bright tactical led flashlights, I think we should include it here. You’re going to need a flashlight for EDC preparedness anyway! It’s recommended that you buy it together with a self-defense keychain.
As defensive tools, these self-defense keychains with the exception of Cold Steel Micro Recon 1 are non-lethal tools (I emphasize on tools) and you will need some practice and handling time to be effective with it. Bear in mind that no self-defense keychain or self-defense product or weapon will replace proper self-defense training and vigilance.
